Ahram Online: Virtual Cannes Market: Arab Cinema Centre and Telescope Film launch database of Arab films. “Within the Virtual Cannes Market’s events, and aiming to expand the scope of the Arab cinema’s exposure internationally, Telescope Film announced the launch of Arab Cinema Centre’s microsite. Arab Films and Where to Find Them! is the opening motto for the new microsite, as it serves as a comprehensive English-language guide to Arab cinema.”
Esquire Middle East: The Zay Initiative: the digital archive built to preserve Arab heritage. “… few of us rarely take the time to appreciate and understanding of how our aesthetic choices actual impact and reflect the culture that surrounds us – and, before we know it, we’re on to the next thing. Hoping to preserve this element of Arab culture is The Zay Initiative. Launching this month, the unique, non-profit organization is dedicated to the preservation of Arab heritage through the documentation and conservation of traditional clothing from the MENA region.”
New-to-me, from Al-Fanar Media: A Social Way to Learn About Arab Culture. “The audience members were not geologists or petroleum engineers. They did not even know in advance the subjects of the talks they had come to hear. Only the names of the speakers and the event’s location were publicized beforehand. The event was organized by a group called Afikra, founded four years ago by a 32-year-old Lebanese social entrepreneur and former high school teacher, Mikey Muhanna. The purpose of Afikra is to provide a social environment in which people can learn about and discuss Arab history and culture.” This would make a great podcast! A digital archive of past lectures is available.
