CogDogBlog: Gizmo-ing Stuff to Mastodon

CogDogBlog: Gizmo-ing Stuff to Mastodon. “Once Jim Groom took the nudge to figure out how to spin up Mastodon in the Reclaim Hosting cloud gizmo (see, thingamagig!) and launch a place for DS106 I was starting to think how it might be possible to wire up the DS106 Daily Create (well into its 10th year, never missed a day, and zeroing in on the 4000th TDC, one has to hum the song Where Have All the MOOCs Gone) to join Tootland.”

CogDogBlog: Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Go Back into the Google Image CC Search Waters Again…

CogDogBlog: Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Go Back into the Google Image CC Search Waters Again… . “I am not looking for any kind of fix here. And I don’t want to keep documenting this stuff. But it is obvious to me that we should not sent people to use Google Image search for Creative Licensed photos without making them aware that the results are not to be trusted.”

CogDogBlog: The More You Dig Into Google Search Results, the Worse the Smell

CogDogBlog: The More You Dig Into Google Search Results, the Worse the Smell. “Having made the call for the broken state of Google’s touted ability to locate open licensed images getting some notice (my peak Hacker News hit) and followed up with what looks like improvement is even not, and sad for how wrong and terrible Google’s delivered results turns out to be. I could not resist going back in to look more closely. That sensation when you open the refrigerator door and smell something rotten?”

CogDogBlog: A CC Only Google Images Bookmarklet By Request

CogDogBlog: A CC Only Google Images Bookmarklet By Request. “Hmmm, someone pressed the 3 button. This is an outflow of the recent hand tossed post about my hackly idea for making Google Image search server only Creative Commons licensed results…. @ResearchBuzz tossed in the request line. I have to give Tara a listen as I have been pilgering links and resources from her site since the beginning of web time.” It always weirds me out when I guest star in my own newsletter.

CogDogBlog: Forcing Google’s Image Search to Provide CC Licensed Results by Default

CogDogBlog: Forcing Google’s Image Search to Provide CC Licensed Results by Default. “I find perverse pleasure in finding a way to force Google to Sit, Stay, Rollover, and do the tricks I want it to do rather than what it decides. The sense of power is of course a fabricated illusion, but still, the effect is robustly divine. After some explanation of my current approach, creating a quick shortcut for google image results that are CC licensed, and steps hpw ypu can do the same, I present my newest hatched karate chop to Google.”

CogDogBlog: Godzilla Eats All the Images Missing ALT Tags

CogDogBlog: Godzilla Eats All the Images Missing ALT Tags . “I can’t fix twitter. Even Twitter can’t really fix Twitter. But I can do something about my own habits, and more– as with a helpful nudge I added and changed some features in the TRU Collector SPLOT to better encourage the acts that my vengeful Godzilla would look elsewhere. In the last year I’ve made more of a focused effort to include alt text for images I tweet.”

It’s a CogDog Thing: Google Has Crossed The Line Adserving My Name (CogDogBlog)

CogDogBlog: It’s a CogDog Thing: Google Has Crossed The Line Adserving My Name. “We are literally frogs in the internet pan of water, with Google at al just incrementally turning up the surveillance capitalism flame every so gently that we just never notice the boil. So yes, it’s a tad creepy to see ads show up in say Instagram for products I have recently been searching for in Google (never stopping to think how this data is traveling between 2 of the big data competitors). But I keep on clicking, Maybe even marvel It’s warm in the pan.”

I’m Breaking the Web: I’ve Come to Bury Feed2JS (maybe) (CogDogBlog)

CogDogBlog: I’m Breaking the Web: I’ve Come to Bury Feed2JS (maybe). “As far as I can tell, Feed2JS my long running web service that enabled ordinary humans to insert dynamic RSS feed content into web pages, is kaput. I’ve been unable to diagnose, but it seems to be an issue with cURL command inside the MagpieRSS parser library. This PHP code was released in 2004, so its startling it worked this long.” Looked at the comments and this might get fixed! Stay tuned.
