ESPN: Military, Fenway Bowls canceled because of COVID-19 issues. “Two more bowl games have been canceled because of COVID-19 concerns. The Military Bowl Presented by Peraton and the Wasabi Fenway Bowl were canceled Sunday because of COVID-19 issues in the Boston College and Virginia football programs. Boston College had been set to play East Carolina on Monday afternoon in the game that was set to air on ESPN.”
24/7 Sports: Hawaii Bowl canceled after Rainbow Warriors withdraw, citing COVID-19 cases, transfers and injuries. “The Hawaii Bowl has been canceled after Hawaii was forced to withdraw from the game due to a combination of COVID-19 cases, transfers and injuries, it was announced Thursday night. The game was to pit the Rainbow Warriors against the Memphis Tigers Friday at Clarence T. C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu.”
Gobbler Country: UVA’s Scott Stadium Name Changes on Google Maps. “I don’t know how the Google Maps information is maintained or updated. The Google Maps entry for Lane Stadium North has been changed back to the previous name of Scott Stadium and the latest photos reverted to something less VT-centric. I don’t know when it happened, but for a few short hours yesterday it read as what you see above, and I was able to collect the screen shots before the Google Maps information was changed back.” Lane Stadium is apparently the name of the Virginia Tech football stadium; this is a sports prank I’m not fully-equipped to appreciate.
24/7 Sports: Digital football archive a labor of love for Washington SID. “For those of us who are considered ‘non-essential’ workers but don’t work from home and have been ordered to shelter in place, this can be a time to catch up on all sorts of things. Clean the house, organize your papers, catch up on correspondence, cross books off your ‘must-read’ list. For Washington Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications Jeff Bechthold (or Sports Information Director (SID), for short), he doesn’t mind sprinkling in a little bit of work during his forced hiatus. That’s because he’s taken on the task of updating and digitizing Washington’s vast football archive.”
TechCrunch: Facebook will live stream over a dozen college football games this year. “Facebook wants you to watch more video on its site – including those you can’t see elsewhere. To that end, the social network earlier this month launched a dedicated section for original video, called Watch. Now that’s being expanded with the addition of live-streamed college football games, broadcast in partnership with sports network Stadium. The deal will bring 15 live college football games to Facebook, including nine Conference USA games and six Mountain West games.”
