Edinburgh Live: Incredible interactive new website brings parts of Edinburgh back to life. “Using historic street maps, vintage photos, newspaper clippings, post office directory data, and people’s own memories, Old Leith Rediscovered allows locals to explore Edinburgh’s famous port as it was at the end of the 19th century. The interactive site features a zoomable version of Charles Goad’s 1892 Fire Insurance Plan of Leith, which captured the streets and structures of the old Leith in extraordinary detail, giving information on everything from the names of businesses, what they did there and the construction materials used in individual buildings.”

Digit: Digital Archive Collaboration Will Preserve Edinburgh’s Past. “Edinburgh’s Libraries Service is collaborating with the Living Memory Association to preserve Edinburgh’s past through its digital images archive. Edinburgh Collected is an online collection available through library service where people can browse or share photographs and memories of Edinburgh’s past. Users can also upload pictures or save them to an online scrapbook. The online collection will host more than 2,500 pictures provided by the Leith-based association, adding to what is already the most extensive historic photography database in Edinburgh.”

From the University of St. Andrews: New technology reveals old Edinburgh. “The lost townscape of sixteenth-century Edinburgh has been brought back to life by researchers at the University of St Andrews. The new digital reconstruction is the first to be created of the period, and is based on a drawing from 1544, thought to be the earliest accurate depiction of the capital. The virtual time travel technology – which will be released as an app in May – provides a unique window into the capital around the time of the birth of Mary Queen of Scots.”

Now available: an online archive of photos showing 1920s Leith (a district to the north of Edinburgh, Scotland). “A series of images giving the public a rare glimpse into 1920s Leith and its people has been made available online. When local historian Fraser Parkinson was entrusted with a set of photographs showing Leith slums in the inter-war era, he knew they deserved to be shared with a wider audience.”
