Edugraph: Jadavpur University and University of Exeter join hands for digital archive of famine tales. “It’s a digital tale of two famines, told through art, connecting two continents with a shared history. Jadavpur University and University of Exeter, England, are collaborating on a project to document and also artistically depict the history of famines in India and Britain. The project, Famine Tales: Famine and Dearth in India and Britain 1550-1800, is being funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), UK.”

Aleteia: The Catholic Church’s new tool for ending hunger: machine learning. “Drought, major storms, crop disease, other climate-related events, and illness are ‘shocks’ that threaten food security, says Catholic Relief Services, the American Catholic Church’s overseas aid agency. Now, CRS says it has a tool that it says can help aid agencies better respond to such shocks so that ordinary people don’t go hungry. That tool is called MIRA, or Measurement Indicators for Resilience Analysis.”

Irish Times: Band Aid archive arrives for posterity after Bob Geldof donation. “An archivist will spend up to two years cataloguing memorabilia from the famous 1984 campaign for those affected by famine in Ethiopia, the National Library of Ireland (NLI) said. The Boomtown Rats frontman is giving the State hundreds of letters, artwork, poetry and musical recordings after the material had accumulated in a warehouse in London. Much of it will be digitised and put on display for the world to see at the NLI in Dublin.”

IrishCentral: The Great Famine Voices Roadshow breaking the silence over the Irish famine. “A million dead, a million fled was the old saying, but concern over igniting further strife in the present (a particular concern during the Troubles) kept a lid on most discussions of it. But now a new roadshow coming to the USA and Canada plans to give voice to the descendants of famine era Irish immigrants, many for the first time. Left glaringly unaddressed in many quarters, the wound stayed raw for decades after the disaster – which was the worst episode of mass starvation in 19 century Europe – traumatized all who lived through it.” Some of the information from this initiative will be stored in an online archive.
