Rutgers University Libraries: Institute of Jazz Studies Launches Count Basie Family Papers and Artifacts Finding Aid. “A native of Red Bank, New Jersey, William James ‘Count’ Basie (1904–1984) was one of the giants of jazz, a global icon, and still one of the most influential, popular, and recognized figures in American music. The Institute acquired Basie’s papers and artifacts in 2018 and is responsible for ensuring its long-term preservation. The roughly 200-cubic-foot collection, consisting of more than 1,000 items, is unparalleled in its size and thorough documentation of Basie’s life and career, as well as those of his wife, Catherine, and daughter, Diane.”

Jazzed: National Library of Norway Releases Thousands of Intimate Photographs of Jazz Greats. “The Norwegian music journalist Randi Hultin (1926–2000) opened her home to many of the great jazz legends. She documented her life in the company of artists such as John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Count Basie in the form of tens of thousands of photographs – pictures which are now held in the National Library of Norway…. A large number of pictures have also been digitised and uploaded to the online archives.”
Oneida Daily Dispatch: Hamilton College releases new ‘Jazz Backstory’ podcast. “Hamilton College Jazz Archive Director Monk Rowe has helped collect over 400 video and audio recordings of jazz greats, their band members, critics, writers, and composers who tell their personal histories in the world of jazz for the Hamilton College Jazz Archive. Rowe, who conducted the majority of these original interviews, combed through the interviews to focus on topics inherent to the creative life – inspiration, improvisation, training, back-stage dramas and touring challenges. The result was his creation of a new podcast series.”
Jazz Journal: The wealth of jazz on the Ed Sullivan Show. “The Ed Sullivan Show, which ran on CBS TV in the US every Sunday night from 1948-1971, is well known for appearances by The Beatles and other pop bands, but it also hosted many jazz performers, thus inadvertently forming a valuable historical archive of performances by leading jazz artists. Performances by several of these artists are now available on the official YouTube channel of The Ed Sullivan Show.”
Vanderbilt University: Heard Libraries acquire collection of jazz, world music master Yusef Lateef. “Vanderbilt’s Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries are now home to a rich collection of research materials from the life and career of Yusef A. Lateef, a Grammy-winning musician who played a pioneering role in bringing Middle Eastern and Asian sounds to American jazz. Lateef also was an author, visual artist, educator and philosopher. He died in 2013, but his cultural significance lives on through his artistry.”
Nola: 2021 New Orleans Jazz Fest canceled as Louisiana COVID cases surge; spring dates announced. “The 2021 Jazz Fest, like 2020’s, has been canceled after first being postponed because of surging rates of COVID-19 infections. The loss of the festival, and the thousands of visitors that it would have attracted, is another economic and psychological blow not just for musicians, music venues and festival workers and vendors, but for New Orleans’ larger tourism economy.”
Queen Anne and Magnolia News: SPL and Earshot Jazz partner to create digital collection of magazine archives . “The Seattle Public Library and Earshot Jazz, the city’s preeminent jazz organization, have partnered to create a comprehensive digital collection of the entire Earshot Jazz magazine archives, from 1984 to present. Any SPL.org website visitor can now browse, search and download articles from the collection, and no Library card is needed.”
PC Gamer: The latest Google Doodle is a stylish jazz swing rhythm game. “I’m a bit of a rhythm game fanatic, always looking to sink my teeth into a new musical experience. So imagine my surprise when I saw that the latest Google Doodle was, in fact, a rhythm game. The doodle celebrates swing music and the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, an iconic venue during the swing era and one of the first public spaces in the United States to be racially inclusive with a no-discrimination policy.”
NOLA: Tipitina’s, the Howlin’ Wolf to reopen with limited-capacity shows this weekend. “For the first time since the coronavirus pandemic commenced a year ago, Tipitina’s and the Howlin’ Wolf plan to open to the public. Tipitina’s will host keyboardist and singer Ivan Neville for two limited-capacity, seated-only ‘Piano Session’ shows Friday, at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Both shows sold out not long after tickets went on sale Monday.”
Tulane News: Tulane University jazz archive gets new name and expanded mission. “Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC) is pleased to announce an expanded mission and new name for its famed music archive. Previously known as the Hogan Jazz Archive, the reconceived Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz will expand the scope of its collections, including acquisitions that document late 20th century and 21st-century contemporary jazz, rhythm and blues, funk, hip hop and rock musicians in New Orleans and the surrounding region, as well as the industry and culture that fosters and supports those artists.”
NYS Music: The National Jazz Museum In Harlem Announces Online Museum Access Through Google Arts And Culture. “Beginning on February 18, 2021, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem is available for anybody in the world to visit virtually on the Google Arts and Culture platform. The free, virtual tour allows viewers to experience videos and high-resolution pictures of jazz artifacts from the Museum’s collections as a part of the Google Arts & Culture Black History Month project.”
Jazz Journal: Women in Jazz Media to support female writers. “Fiona Ross, a singer and jazz writer, has set up the Women in Jazz Media group to raise the profile of women who work in jazz media – journalists, photographers, publishers and editors – and encourage greater female participation.”
