The Conversation: Historic Iwo Jima footage shows individual Marines amid the larger battle. “I came across this film clip in my work as a curator of a collection of motion picture films shot by Marine Corps photographers from World War II through the 1970s. In a partnership between the History Division of the Marine Corps and the University of South Carolina, where I work, we are digitizing these films, seeking to provide direct public access to the video and expand historical understanding of the Marine Corps’ role in society. Over two years of scanning, I have come to realize that our work also enables a more powerful relationship with the past by fostering individual connections with videos, something that the digitizing of the large quantity of footage makes possible.”

The total number of discharges has risen to 206, up from 169 last week. The fiscal 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law Monday, dictates that the military services cannot dishonorably discharge members for vaccine refusal. The discharges must be either honorable or general under honorable conditions.”

Defense One: Thousands of Sailors, Marines Remain Unvaccinated After Deadline. “As of Monday, 92 percent of Marines are fully vaccinated and 95 percent have at least one shot, leaving about 9,000 people without any vaccine immunity. The numbers for the Navy are 96.3 percent fully vaxxed, 97.2 percent partially vaxxed, leaving about 9,500 sailors with no vaccine immunity. Meanwhile, the Navy has lowered its official vaccination rate after discovering errors in their data.”

So, higher-ups acted quickly Monday when Marines of 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, mistakenly received moldy sandwiches and prepackaged meals slated for disposal, according to a spokesman for Marine Corps Installations Pacific.”

C4ISRNET: Marines want tool to identify fake social media accounts posing as senior personnel. “The U.S. Marine Corps wants a commercial off-the-shelf tool to identify social media accounts that pose a threat to personnel and the Marines Corps Enterprise Network. According to a request for quotation released Aug. 20, the goal of the effort is to identify ‘evil twin’ social media accounts, or accounts pretending to be key personnel, general officers and senior executive service employees. The RFQ claimed these fake accounts are sending malicious links to service members, as well as extorting information and money while posing as key members of the Corps.”

University of South Carolina: Parris Island Historical and Museum Society preserves historic film collection. “On Tuesday, July 17, 2018, Sgt. Major James Moore (Ret.) of the Parris Island Historical and Museum Society (PIHMS) Board of Directors, presented Bill Bethea, on behalf of University of South Carolina Libraries Moving Image Research Collections (MIRC), a check for $200,000 on stage at the Beaufort Water Festival. The generous contribution will fund two positions for two years at MIRC solely dedicated to digitizing the U.S. Marine Corps Film Repository, a collection of films shot by U.S. Marines throughout the 20th century.”
