Variety: YouTube Paid Over $6 Billion to Music Industry in Past 12 Months. “YouTube, the world’s largest streaming platform for music, announced that it has paid more than $6 billion to the music industry in the 12 months between July 2021 and June 2022 — some $2 billion more than it said it paid in the previous 12 months.”
Laughing Squid: An Amazing Playlist of the Entire MTV ‘120 Minutes’ Catalog Featuring Over 2,500 Music Videos. “Chris Reynolds put together an amazing video playlist featuring every alternative music video that was played on the classic MTV series 120 Minutes. The series first ran from 1986 to 2003 and was resurrected for a short time in 2011. This remarkable archive includes 2,512 music videos and was made with Tune My Music, a service that transfers playlists from other resources to YouTube.”
Tubefilter: 10 years ago, there were no YouTube videos with a billion views. Now, 317 music videos have reached that mark.. “Psy‘s groundbreaking music video, which played a significant role in the global expansion of K-pop, arrived on YouTube on July 15, 2012. In November of that year, ‘Gangnam Style’ became the all-time most-watched video on YouTube. A few weeks after that, it became the first video to crack the billion-view threshold. Ten years later, ‘Gangnam Style’ is no longer the most-viewed music video on YouTube.”
The Verge: An interactive Doja Cat music video can introduce you to programming. “Girls Who Code, the nonprofit organization that aims to get more women and girls interested in the field of computer science, has debuted what it calls the ‘first ever’ codable music video. The organization partnered with Doja Cat, transforming her new music video for Woman into an interactive experience.”
BBC: BTS’s Dynamite smashes YouTube records and heads for UK number one. “Dynamite, the latest single by Korean boy band BTS, has smashed YouTube records – and looks set to be the UK’s number one single this Friday. The pastel-coloured, dance-heavy video was watched 101.1 million times in 24 hours after its release last Friday. That surpasses the previous record, set by fellow K-Pop band Blackpink, whose song How You Like That racked up 86.3 million views in 24 hours in June.”
CNET: Facebook adds official music videos, taking on YouTube. “Facebook said Friday it’s adding official music videos to its social network in the US, starting this week. The feature will allow people to find, watch and share music videos on Facebook, taking on the world’s No. 1 place to watch music videos online (and the No. 1 place to watch, well, all videos online): Google’s YouTube.”
Mashable: Band creates a trippy music video using Zoom. “Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, a band based in California, which has a statewide stay at home order, filmed the video for their song ‘Phenom’ over the video conferencing software. It starts with singer and frontrunner Thao Nguyen opening the app. Background dancers join the call as the beat picks up.”
TechCrunch: YouTube Music cracks down on rampant chart manipulation with new pay-for-play ban. “YouTube will no longer allow paid views and advertising to influence its YouTube Music Charts, the company announced this morning. Instead, it will calculate its rankings based only on view counts coming from organic plays. In addition, it’s changing its methodology for reporting on 24-hour record debuts to also only count views from organic sources, including direct links to the video, search results, Watch Next and Trending — but not video advertising.”
TechCrunch: YouTube partners with Universal to upgrade nearly 1,000 classic music videos to HD. “YouTube has teamed up with Universal Music Group to remaster nearly a thousand classic music videos, the companies announced today, including those from Billy Idol, Beastie Boys, Boyz II Men, George Strait, Janet Jackson, Kiss, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, Lionel Richie, Maroon 5, Meat Loaf, No Doubt/Gwen Stefani, Smokey Robinson, The Killers, Tom Petty and others.”
NPR: Watch 3 Rare Prince Videos For ‘Endorphinmachine,’ ‘Rock And Roll Is Alive,’ ‘Dolphin’. “The Prince Estate has announced that it will be digitally uploading videos from the artist’s visual archive on a weekly basis, honing in on his 1995-2010 catalog. To kick off the series, they’ve posted seven videos from his albums The Gold Experience and Chaos And Disorder, which were released in 1995 and 1996, respectively.”
Eyerys: Psy’s “Gangnam Style” Reaching 3 Billion Views On YouTube. “Psy was one of the few that initially introduced billions of people to K-pop music with “Gangnam Style”. Released in July 2012, it was the first YouTube video that reached 1 billion views, and it finally reached 3 billion on November 26 at about 8AM KST. This was three years after Gangnam Style ‘broke’ YouTube for reaching 2,147,483,647 views, and two years Psy received the Diamond Play Button from YouTube for reaching 10 million subscribers on his official YouTube channel.”

Citypages: Twin/Tone Records opens its video vault on YouTube. “If you read our profile of the Suicide Commandos, you learned that Twin/Tone Records recently stirred out of its long hiatus to release the band’s new album, and you saw a 1979 live clip of the Commandos in action. YouTube is hosting a competition to make a video for an Elton John song. “Like many legendary musicians, Elton John didn’t get music videos for some of his best-known songs — they simply came too soon for the likes of MTV. Thanks to the internet, however, he’s getting a second chance. YouTube is backing a competition, Elton John: The Cut, that challenges you to brainstorm an official music video treatment for ‘Bennie and the Jets,’ ‘Rocket Man,’ or ‘Tiny Dancer.’”
