OCLC: National Library of Cuba collection registered in WorldCat to benefit researchers worldwide. “The University of Florida is working with the Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí (BNCJM), the National Library of Cuba, to register Cuban materials in WorldCat, the most comprehensive global database of library collections, making these resources available to researchers around the world. Through a unique partnership between the BNCJM, the University of Florida and OCLC, 133,000 Cuban titles have been registered in WorldCat. More than 97,000 of these are unique records in WorldCat, and valuable additions to the worldwide library community.”
OCLC: OCLC and Internet Archive collaborate to expand library access to digital collections. “OCLC and Internet Archive are working together to make the Archive’s collection of 2.5 million digitized books easier to find and access online and through local libraries. OCLC will process metadata from the Internet Archive for its digital collection, matching to existing records in WorldCat, the world’s most comprehensive database of information about library collections, or adding a new record if one does not exist. The WorldCat record will include a link leading back to the Archive.org record. From there, searchers can examine or potentially borrow the related digital item.” This is TERRIFIC news.
NCompass Blog: OCLC Discontinues Publishing Print Editions of Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). “According to information posted to the OCLC Dewey Services website, OCLC has decided to stop publishing English-language print editions of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC).”
OCLC Next: Recalibrating the WorldCat odometer. “The 1,000,000,000 OCLC Control Number was recently created in WorldCat. It was for a digital image from the Chiba University Library (YA@) in Chiba, Japan. We knew this milestone was fast approaching, and we sent guidance to member libraries and to library vendors to prepare them for a tenth digit in the OCN.”
The PURL (Persistent URLs) service is now being run by the Internet Archive. “OCLC and the Internet Archive today announced the results of a year-long cooperation to ensure the future of purl.org. The organizations have worked together to build a new service hosted by the Internet Archive that will manage the persistent URLs and sub-domain redirections for purl.org, purl.com and purl.net. Since its introduction by OCLC Research in 1995, purl.org has provided a source of Persistent URLs (PURLs) that redirect users to the correct hosting location for documents, data, and websites as they change over time.”
Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) has added a lot of records to WorldCat. “Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) has contributed 2.4 million records to WorldCat, the world’s most comprehensive network of data about library collections. The contribution, which includes 800,000 new records, will make BAnQ’s valuable collections more visible and accessible to researchers around the world.”
OCLC has signed agreements with several publishers to add metadata to WorldCat Discovery. “OCLC has signed agreements with leading publishers to add metadata for books, e-books, journals, databases and other materials that will make their content discoverable through WorldCat Discovery Services.”
