Car Expert: Nissan publishes almost 60 years of archived content. “Rejoice Nissan nerds! We’ve just found your new favourite tool to go back in time and relive the day your favourite model launched…. The Japanese carmaker has scanned and digitised all its existing pre-1999 releases and made them available on the newsroom as PDFs of the original print versions.”
The Verge: How An International Hacker Network Turned Stolen Press Releases Into $100 Million. “Newswires like Business Wire are clearinghouses for corporate information, holding press releases, regulatory announcements, and other market-moving information under strict embargo before sending it out to the world. Over a period of at least five years, three US newswires were hacked using a variety of methods from SQL injections and phishing emails to data-stealing malware and illicitly acquired login credentials.”
Mashable: The Trump team just tried to delete old press releases because it doesn’t understand the internet. “Trump’s team appeared to realize its mistake … so they deleted literally every last press release from Trump’s site. Check it out for yourself. The press releases are nowhere to be found. Buuuuttt … unfortunately, that’s not how the internet works. Trump’s team may have pulled the press releases from his website, but they are still available on the Wayback Machine, a project run by the Internet Archive that keeps records of the internet’s past for all to see.”
In case ya need it: how to find Government of Canada press releases. “Government of Canada press releases, also referred to as news releases, are issued for the media to announce the latest news of government departments. At Library and Archives Canada (LAC), we hold a number of press releases, some in hard copy format in our archival holdings, and some in our published collection. The LAC collection is a great starting point to search for older releases that are not currently online.”
Bluesky is making old aerial photos of Britain available online (PRESS RELEASE). “Thousands of aerial photographs of Britain, dating back more than seventy years, are now available online. Visitors to http://www.blueskymapshop.com can now search, view and download images from the Old Aerial Photos collection, which includes some of the earliest commercial aerial survey images, military photographs as well as many national archives.” This is a paid resource. Most of the maps I looked at were about £20 for a download. More if you wanted prints or a statement of authenticity.
BusinessWire now has language-based Twitter feeds. “The new Twitter handles feature tweets based on news releases distributed in the following languages: Chinese (CN), Chinese (HK), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish.”
