Texas State Library and Archives Commission: Texas State Library and Archives Commission Launches New State Symbols Website. “The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has announced a new web page featuring the official legislatively-designed State Symbols of Texas. The new site, accessible at http://www.tsl.texas.gov/ref/abouttx/symbols, features each official state symbol with a photograph and citation of the relevant resolution from the Texas Legislature. State symbols have been designated since 1901, when the bluebonnet was chosen as the official flower of Texas by the 27th Legislature.”

9to5 Google: ‘Material Symbols’ are the newest Google Font icons with over 2,500 glyphs. “In addition to introducing a new logo last year, Google Fonts added support for open source icons. Google’s Material Symbols are now available leveraging variable font technology. Many of these 2,500 glyphs should be familiar to Google app users, and follow last year’s release of the ‘Material Icons’ collection (2,000 distinct icons in five styles), which remains available in Google Fonts.”

NiemanLab: VizPol takes a cue from bird-watching apps to help journalists identify unfamiliar political symbols. “Built by researchers at Columbia University’s journalism and engineering schools and launched as an invite-only beta this week, VizPol can currently recognize 52 symbols. Many are associated with right-wing and white supremacist organizations, but the app also includes insignia used by libertarian, anti-fascist, hactivist, and other groups considered political but not extremist.”
