Radio Iowa: U-I wins grant for health stories project. “A project-based at the University of Iowa has won a national grant to launch a digital library for demonstrating the importance of stories about health. The narratives will teach people how to gather personal stories about health — in English and Spanish. Codirector Daena Goldsmith says the project has the ability to improve patients’ lives and improve health care provider morale, especially during a pandemic.”

In particular, writers affiliated with the Workshop, both as alumni and/or professors, have gone on to found or teach at many other creative writing programs around the nation…. The PEP, supported by the Digital Scholarship and Publishing Studio at UI Libraries, has compiled extensive datasets that track those networks of Workshop-affiliated writers.”

Washington Post: Iowa cuts four sports, becoming the first Big Ten school to ax programs during the pandemic. “Four sports that had spanned a combined 328 years at the University of Iowa suffered discontinuation [August 21], trimmed from another athletics budget ailing from the effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic. In an open letter, the university president and the athletic director of a program in an especially stormy year announced the end of the men’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming and men’s tennis programs at the end of the 2020-21 academic year. It signaled the end of programs that had begun, respectively, in 1922, 1917, 1974 and 1939, according to Iowa media guides.”

Daily Iowan: UI fossil collection receives 18,000 donated pieces. “UI Earth and Environmental Sciences Collections Manager Tiffany Adrain is in charge of handling the fossil donation. She helped move the 250 boxes of bones this summer with the help of four intrigued students…. [Robert] Wolf documented all of his fossils on index cards and organized them into 22 boxes and two binders. This information will be cross-referenced by professionals and faculty members from the UI and other institutions after it is added to an online database, Adrain said.”

University of Iowa: Rare Recordings of Civil Rights Activists Available Now. “In 1963 and 1964, attorney Bob Zellner recorded a series of interviews with civil rights activists in Mississippi and Alabama. Zellner conducted the interviews on behalf of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in an effort to document the activists’ experiences, which were often under challenging and violent circumstances. The interviewees participated in the Mississippi Summer Project in 1964, later to be known as Freedom Summer, a drive to register African Americans in the Magnolia State to vote. For decades, attempts by blacks to register at county court houses across the state were met with intimidation, harassment, and even violence. Freedom Summer was an organized response to this situation, with activists from across the U.S. participating, including over 800 college and university students. Among them were about a dozen students from the University of Iowa.”

The Daily Iowan: UI collection of art graduate pieces finds a new physical and digital home. “With around 6,000 pieces of artwork created by UI art graduates in the collection, some dating back to the 1930s, the Thesis Rental Gallery tells the university’s art history. In May, the Thesis Rental Gallery moved to the Old Museum of Art on the west side of campus, a much more central location compared to their former space in Oakdale. Beginning fall semester, the gallery is being moved to an online database as well.”
